Two crew working the sail as water sprays off the bow of a 420

Farallon Rec

Learn to Sail II

From competent passenger to rated skipper.

Learn to Sail I makes you safe; this course makes you independent. You'll sail solo, sail overpowered on purpose, recover a capsized boat until it's boring, and learn the lake's weather tells — where the northwest gusts funnel between the islands, what a dark line on the water means, and when the right call is to stay on shore.

Graduates leave with the Dinghy Skipper rating: the 420s and Flying Scots are yours, whenever the flag is up.

What we cover

  • Solo boat handling
  • Heavy-air technique and depowering
  • Rescue and self-rescue
  • Rules of the road, for real this time
  • Reading Farallon Cove's weather

Finish the course

Earn Dinghy Skipper.

You can rig, launch, sail, capsize-recover, and land a centerboard boat by yourself, and you know when the weather says don't.

Unlocks: Club 420s and Flying Scots, plus taking guests aboard.
